The visit of Father General of the Society of Jesus, Arturo Sosa Abascal, SJ., in the Island of Madagascar, populated by 25 million began under better auspices on Tuesday 04 October with good weather. The superior of the 18,000 Jesuits scattered across five continents was greeted at the airport in Antananarivo the capital, by a delegation of local Jesuits led by the Provincial, Father. Fulgence Ratsimbazafy, SJ., flanked by the superiors of the local houses. Father General was accompanied by FF. John the Baptist Anyeh, SJ and Joseph Christie, SJ, respectively, Socius to the President of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar, and Secretary of the Society for Higher Education. Fr. General and his entourage are housed in the new community house of St. Michel College (run by the Jesuits) which will be officially blessed during this visit. This trip of Fr. General has a double objective: visit of some 280 Jesuits of the Island and participation in the meeting of the major superiors of the JCAM (Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar).
